Canarian first bonito (Jan 27)
Bonito /bɔ.nitɔ./ Sea fish of the same family as tuna, present everywhere provided you are OK to wait !; Examples : "Waouh, you should have seen the size of Velvet's bonito (Anon., 2015)"; "You should learn how to cut fillets properly, you gougnafier! (Hélène, 2015)." The video is here .

La Palma (Jan 14)
A night crossing to go from Santa Cruz (Tenerife) to Santa Cruz (La Palma). We arrived on 29 December just before Pascal & Pascale (them it's for work ..). The first week's highlights were the recurrent surge in the harbor ("hey Harbour Master, how about fixing that swell problem with the gate you've been promising for years ?") and the cool nights of the Atlantic Odyssey (a perfect motivation for our next year's crossing).
My friends support my efforts to convince Helene that she should not be so anxious about that crossing (see here, ah ah thank you Klaus).
In the second week, bad weather in our heads, we were horrified by the Charlie Hebdo killing, that we could follow in detail, thanks to Le Monde and Mediapart. The iPod (shuffle set) made some good choices, including that of Lennon: "Imagine there's no country, nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too."
Otherwise the island is very green and really bonita. Bananas everywhere, but also ravines and rugged seashore. The pictures are there . Tomorrow we leave for La Gomera, for an undefined period.
Feliz Navidad (Dec 27)
Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The marina is a bit stuck between development work, unloading cranes and smoking ferries. Fortunately, the national parks within the island a worth a visit. In the center, the area around the volcano looks like Monument Valley. In the Northeast, the primary forest is gorgious, with villages clinging to the ravines. See pictures at the usual location.
Family flew in and it was a nice Christmas. Beautiful walks and 25 dec swim in 20 degrees water . I also learned "Feliz Navidad" (see here ).
La Graciosa (Dec 13)
"Timeless and far from everything", say the guides. Honestly it's true. Western landscape on the edge of the water, white houses, sand streets. If you do not like the dry, go away. The harbour has no electricity or wifi, but fresh water is OK. Reservation is required. Sr Hernandez, the harbor master is friendly and accommodating on departure dates. The view of the Rio (inlet between Lanzarote and Graciosa) is breathtaking and both sides of the island can be seen from the top of small volcanoes. The local butcher is called Sr Cochon and there are plenty of bike rental. See pictures .
The wind blows here as a curiosity. The day before leaving Graciosa to Tenerife (24 to 30 hours at sea), we had crosschecked our zyGrib wind files with a) the general situation in Atlantic from MeteoConsult, b) the wind / wave / pressure maps from PassageWeather, and c) the WindGuru spot forecasts. All comforted the idea of a nice niche (force 3-4, medium wave). And then at night a good force 7 stands in the harbor.Surprise depression? Sudden sirocco ? We asked locals and pontoon neighbors, Sr. Hernandez, even Pascal by email, and finally assumed that it was nothing else than normal easterly, super accelerated in the Rio. We left and it was true: the conditions were in line with expectations soon crossed a few miles. Phew.
Bye bye Facebook, hello blog (from Dec 3)
I liked Facebook but I will limit its use to a minimum. This is not the loss of intellectual property of my photos that worries me, but being treated as a consumer profile and therefore recipient of targeted ads. It disturbs my ego (yet not oversized). This article from Slate tells me that it is possible to struggle a bit, but I've decided to start blogging instead. I'm reading good things on Blogger. It's from Google and I'm not sure they are more respectful, but we'll see.
Soon, my posts should come here ....
